Revealed: Super Monkey Ball Deluxe for PlayStation 2!

Amusement Vision simian-balancing to return.

Bum steers and red herrings from the retail sector land daily in the games industry, but this little titbit from GameStop in the US has certainly grabbed our attention, as it details Super Monkey Ball Deluxe for PlayStation 2.

The game is dated for early January of next year, with no other information available at this time, leaving a whole heap of questions unanswered, the most important of which is – what is Super Monkey Ball Deluxe?

Long-term readers of SPOnG will be aware that the original Monkey Ball was in development for the PlayStation 2, then mysteriously fell away from all global release schedules. It's all speculation at the mo', but SMBD is most likely to be a combination of the better parts of Monkey Balls 1 and 2.

We contacted Sega today who had the following for us: "SEGA is investigating the continuation of the popular Super Monkey Ball brand, however has not confirmed any new Super Monkey Ball games to date."

We’ll keep you updated.

Cool. More mad monkey magic on the way. SMB is as infuriating as it is fun, so PS2 owners can get a dose. Problem is that to have a 4 player you'll have to shell out for a multi tap, thanks a lot Sony for not including 2 extra pad ports. It's the joke of the PS2, that shouldn't have happened. Should be interesting to see if PS3 has 4 pad ports or not, cause PSX doesn't either. You got no excuse really have you Sony, except for money grabbing.

Joji: totally true, but with games like this on the way and Timesplitters 2 already out, there's a clear reason to buy the multitaps. The sad thing is that the PS3 could be released with two control ports and people would still shell out for the multitap rather than look elsewhere for consoles better-suited to multiplayer titles.

SMB Deluxe will be a compilation of 1 & 2 plus a few 'bonus' levels and mini-games, no doubt about it. But with PS2's analog sticks? Eww. Not gonna work.
