Guerrilla’s Killzone has been touted as a Sony masterpiece for well over a year now. With its messianic claims of greatness, it has rapidly become the Darius (of Pop Idol fame, remember? Oh well...) of the games industry. When anything claims to be this great, you can’t help but assume it is lying. Either that, or you simply resent the arrogance of such precocious ambition. However, as genuine video footage adds to the weight of the argument already presented by the swathe of screenshots, it is difficult not to be slightly impressed. In fact, it’s difficult not to be very impressed.
If there had been less hype surrounding the whole development process, Killzone would have had an awesome impact at this point. It would have been a totally amazing revelation and journalists could have been labelling it as a Halo 2-beater right now. Instead, the result is just a general acknowledgment that it could be as good as it’s supposed to be, and to be honest, that’s hardly something to make a song and dance about.
