Sony has announced that Tuesday saw its 100 millionth console shipped from its Japanese factory. Quite who’s going to buy a new-old PlayStation is uncertain, but it would probably be some sort of cave-dwelling juvenile who hasn’t noticed that the release of PSOne games has slowed to less than a trickle.
Having enjoyed nearly a decade as the world’s favourite console, the sales are undeniably impressive. However, Sony has shifted nearly 70 million PS2 units in half this time, although sales of these will start to slow as the proposed launch of PS3 looms.
Presumably, by the time of the PS3 release date, the original little grey box will be completely obsolete (especially considering the PS2’s backwards compatibility). At this point, Sony lovers should stack their 100 million consoles on top of one another and build a staircase leading right up to the pearly gates of console-heaven.
