The Total War series has gained an enthusiastic following, with its fine historical nuances and thoughtful RTS gameplay. Ancient Rome is the chosen setting for Creative Assembly’s latest effort, and the graphics engine that drives it is almost as powerful as Hannibal’s favourite elephant. The ability to animate over 10,000 on screen legionnaires at one time should certainly convey the epic scale of the historical battles CA hope to emulate.
The scope for such rich visual detailing has already earned Rome: Total War a few hours on our screens. Time Commanders (BBC2) employed a team of bespectacled strategists to ‘act out’ various historical scenarios using the preliminary graphics engine, and the History Channel will be following suit with an RTW-powered documentary-type affair later this year.
With solid guarantees for illustrative prowess and deep tactical gameplay, both students and professors of Total War should be fully sated by the finished product when it arrives this autumn.
