Digital Interactive Systems Corporation revealed their new console concept today in LA. The basic principle is founded on DISC’s ‘Drop and Play’ technology, which will allow gamers to play PC titles straight from their chosen unit. Using embedded Windows XP technology, the player simply pops the disc into the drive, and hey presto - it boots up, installs itself and then runs, making PC gaming as straightforward as on the average home console.

DISC isn’t actually planning on manufacturing any of these consoles itself, choosing to license the ‘Drop and Play’ software to separate hardware manufacturers. Apex Digital is the first of these to present one of these machines to the public: and their ApeXtreme DISCover console should be launched before Christmas this year.

There will be variations between the different DISCover units, although the central features will be common to each one. They will all have video recording facilities, a media player and, of course, the capability to play all the latest PC games. The manufacturer-exclusive features will also mean that the various DISCover consoles are likely to have differing technical specifications. So far, Alienware, ABS Computer Technologies, Onkyo, and Teac have all declared their intentions to produce their own DISCover consoles.

Only time will tell how many of these hardware manufacturers actually bring a workable unit to the market, but it will be interesting to see how DISCover’s success (or lack of it) compares to Infinium Labs’ Phantom. After all, they are tackling similar objectives in very different ways.
