Resident Evil is one of the biggest names in the world of video games. It has spawned countless imitators and has even enjoyed an outing on the big screen. However, since it stepped onto the scene during the heady days of the PSOne, the series seems to have lost favour in the hearts of many gamers. Perhaps it’s because the premise has dated, or maybe because there are simply more enjoyable alternatives. Resident Evil 4 looks like it might just grab back that fickle audience in its audacious new Cube incarnation.
Capcom has created a totally new Gamecube-specific graphics engine for RE4 which could well be the most attractive 'Cube game yet (albeit in a deeply sinister way). It’s almost certainly the best-looking Resident Evil game we’ve ever seen, and the behind the shoulder ‘chase-camera’ could be the exact angle we’ve been waiting for. The fixed viewpoint (as used in the original) was often frustrating, and occasionally disorientating; yet the standard 3D camera - as used in Code: Veronica - managed to work at the expense of the tense atmosphere. The new look seems to balance these considerations perfectly.
Have a look at these screens to see what we mean. Chainsaws, bear-traps, shotguns...it’s all there.
