Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, or...

...how to make an omelette out of bananas.

The premise for Donkey Konga was little bit weird, but still quite acceptable, even to our Western sensibilities. The player plugged a drum peripheral into their Cube, and beat out rhythms according to the patterns on screen. Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, however, uses the drum for...er, something other than musical purposes. You see, the player actually controls the giant monkey by playing him a beat. Dance my little beauty! Dance!

If the title is to be taken literally, the player will need to be down with the junglistic massive in a fairly dextrous way. There’s a reason why drum’n’bass music is made with computers and not a drum kit, related to the fact that such rhythms regularly exceed 140 bpm.

We can’t pretend that any of this makes sense, and it may not be any clearer, even after a hands-on playtest. However, any game this original, especially one that extends the life of an existing (and fairly expensive) peripheral, has got to be made welcome.
