GT4 Roars Into View

Screens of Mean Machines.

The Gran Turismo series needs no introduction and little in the way of explanation. When the next instalment proper reaches the shelves in November, the disc will contain in excess of 500 cars and nearly 100 tracks. For a driving simulation, it's as much as you could wish for.

As hoped, Gran Turismo 4 will include an online multiplayer mode, giving petrol-heads and grease-monkeys worldwide a chance to prove their credentials on the global circuit. As these same people deny sleep in favour of adjusting virtual tyre pressures, expect fans to engage in lengthy Clarkson-esque rants about the merits and otherwise of certain feats of mechanical engineering.

The newest feature to be revealed is the photographer mode, which allows the driver to take snaps of the scenery as it whizzes past at 130 mph. Expect obsessive devotees to engage in games of Guess the Circuit as they present ‘photos’ of a blue sky, with a bit of road in the corner, to other like-minded enthusiasts.

Until then, these images will have to suffice.

No it's not! So long as the cars bounce incredibly from barrier to track leaving little more than a slight loss in speed and certainly no damage, I for one won't be happy.

I'd trade in 500 cars and 100 tracks for 5 cars, 10 tracks, decent damage representation and collision repercussions.

Until that day, GT will always be in the rear view mirror of Burnout. It might not be a simulator, but it gives you a damn sight more to think about than tweaking your suspension, and the results of sloppy driving are more than a nudge and a change in placing.
