Nintendo DS to the Power of 100

Dev-kits distributed.

Pikachu - sure to feature on Nintendo DS
Pikachu - sure to feature on Nintendo DS
The excitement surrounding Nintendo’s handheld DS has finally assumed tangible form today, with the revelation that over 100 companies around the world have received their dev-kits. It is no surprise to learn that all the usual suspects are on the list: Activision, Atari, Capcom, EA, Hudson Soft, Konami, Namco, Square Enix, THQ and Ubisoft, as well as more than 90 others can now figure in Nintendo’s DS plans for the future.

Despite this promisingly comprehensive line-up, it is still very early days. Quite how developers approach the dual screen idea is still unknown. Companies like EA have expressed excitement at the new project, but it is difficult to imagine what their angle on the new format might be. For some, it may well be a case of ‘adapting’ existing franchises, rather than creating truly original ideas specifically for the system. Presumably, it will be Nintendo itself that pioneers the most interesting dual-screened titles.

The DS will be unveiled at E3, where the Sony versus Nintendo handheld battle will begin in earnest. Stay tuned for more details.

100 comapanies supporting it. Sounds very promising. Exspecially with Square-Enix support, this could be as good as Nintendo say it is. I have faith in Nintendos handheld and I think I shall pick up a DS when its out. I always welcome things that bring innovation to the market.

Go Nintendo!

Having kind of messed up back with the N64 cart decision, which then caused the lack of 3rd parties, and this same kind of thing now happening to GC, this DS news is hope for Nintendo. I really hope they come out fighting for round three, at E3 with this much support behind them.

There have been rumours about GC2 being backward compatible with GC games. If this is true perhaps it would be interesting to see which developers that have since parted from GC development, decide to slither reluctantly to work with them again.

Nintendo is now definitely gone the way of Commodore and adventure games: a stinkin', rotten body that hasn't been buried, with people trying to give it CPR and doing cartwheels when its chest moves because of that.
Now, calling the Nintendo Dumbassly Self-important (which is what they've been since they've even thought of the Nintendo 64) gets hailed as the next greatest thing, the savior, the whatnot, and go Nintendo. Yawn. Wake me up when something actually happens - i.e., when they either make a REALLY good game (or at least a game that doesn't have faults traceable to just about every other game in the genre, see Ocarina of Time) or when they go out of businness.

Something I hope happens soon. I'd rather swim through a sea of idiot's tears than see decerebrated fanboys (well, I *hope* that's why they are at this point) doing jumps of joy every time physics make a stinking, rotten cadaver jump when defibrillated.

This is right! Nintendo does nothing right for a long time and all right things come from the mind of Miyamoto san.

Perhaps Nintendo should do a Sega and move to only doing games, not hardware. They say they make a profit on each Cube sold, but does that includes research and development? The handbag must have taken lots of time to make right, even with help from hardware friends like ATi.

Let Nintendo die from games hardware, they can keep floating with Pokemon cards and good games for all platforms.

I would like to see Pikmin 3 on PS3 harware, who else?

What are you on about, Nintendo have made some of the most amazing consoles ever and has alway been up with the big boys of consoles like playstation, and xbox(which isn't that good anyway) and playstation don't have as much exp. as Nintendo, who have been in it from the 80's early 90's with NES, before playstion was a drawing on a ideas board in sony's headquarters. so exp. will pay off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pikmin will be on the DS

I do believe Nintendo needs some sort of changing of the guard, perhaps get the old 60-70+ brigade to move on and retire. Maybe old business practices die hard for these lot at the top, and they are still making bad decisions.

I recall when Sega moved a few folk about things got a little better.

Regardless of who I favour, I feel it necessary to give credit where it's due, and give none when it's not due. Nintendo bring a lot to the industry, but that won't continue if they ignore the needs of the customer, when others are meeting them. I still feel they are shooting themselves in the foot, by not going online properly. And if and when they do join the party, it will be very late, and they will still be behind. Someone is clearly lacking vision at Nintendo, a case of an all seeing eye losing sight and followers.

It's good that they addressed the GBA problem with the GBASP, but in other areas they completely ignore customer feedback or requests, then fall on their katana like they enjoy failing. That's no way to win hearts and minds. Things need to change.

He He, funny little fan boy!

When no-one was playing console games, Nintendo ruled the market. When they pissed Sony off over the PlayStation (originally a CD drive for SNES) by deciding to talk to Phillips on the project, they unleashed a monster.

Now Sony and MS have kicked Nintendo's market share into touch while expanding the marked for themselves.

N64 never captured the mass market as it had small cut scenes, due to small carts. No Final Fantasy like film clips there!

GameCube hasn't taken off, still no decent Mario game (Sunshine was not as good as Mario 64) and now Nintendo are in third place, as manufacturers and GameCube is in sixth place in total after PC, PS2, XB, PS & GBA.

Experience is a bad thing when the market shifts quickly, ask Microsoft about the Internet some time!

theyve made bad choice after bad choice

carts for n64. silly custom discs for gamecube that ruled out dvd except for the panasonic cube thing. a broadband adapter that was quitely released and no one talks about. in fact the gc design is a bit silly. i love it but it is hardly going to get the playstation generations heart pumping -- but little jenny will love it.

and wheres pilot wings for gc? im surprised that no one hasnt rippe dit off on ps1 never ming ps2 or xbox. that game ruled.

this are nintendo 2 last chances to live.

make the ds better than the psp and kick some ass or die in the hand world as in the console one,and 2 is to make the next nintendo console so good it gets in 1 or at least 2 rank in consoles or have a complete death

At first I was very skeptical about the DS. I was confused about how it was going to be so different from the GBA, to justify it not being a replacement for it. I still am unsure about if there is going to be room for both of them on the market, but all of this stuff about touch screens, wireless gameplay etc. has got me excited about the DS. Now, I am worried that if there is a new Gameboy on the way after the DS is released (and that is currently what Nintendo will have us believe), it'll seem very backwards if it doesn't have a touch screen and wireless gameplay, and other features of the DS (even possibly the Dual Screen if it proves a vital gameplay feature).

Also, which handheld will the Gamecube and N5 continue to support? If Nintendo are to continue developing the use of connectivity with the handheld to compliment their home consoles, which handheld will they use for this? Surely they won't use both - meaning people would have to buy 3 consoles to enable them to play all their games to their full potential?

Unless, Gameboy is to be in the future sidelined as an extra feature of the Gamecube or N5, with the DS taking over as the mainstream portable console...

I suppose it's only a matter of time till we find out.
