Driv3r has been moved down Atari's global release schedule yet again, in the latest PlayStation 2 slippage at UK developer Reflections.
The revised date for worldwide release now stands at June 21 of this year, as opposed to the last date touted, June 1. No reason has been given for the latest delay, though the situation of Reflections suffering a constant stream of small delays is worryingly reminiscent of the troubled gestation of the firm's last offering, Stuntman.
Stuntman was dogged by slow loading times and was obviously rushed out of the door, resulting in poor reviews across the board and damaging Reflections' until-then spotless record of excellent software releases.
Indeed, the achingly slow emergence of Driv3r can be compared with Core's problems with Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, in that another stalwart UK developer is seemingly having problems in transferring its proven success onto PS2. The fact that we are at this stage of the PlayStation 2's lifecycle and Driv3r is still not released is a little worrying.
On the upside however, Driv3r is without question our most anticipated title due in the next few months, and presents an absolutely mouth-watering prospect to fans of the series. Although the game has been kept solidly (and somewhat frustratingly) under wraps, the thought of a beefed-up Driver, with a more adult tone and running on PlayStation 2, might just see the franchise reclaim its rightful place at the helm of 3D mission-based driving, a genre the original game single-handedly invented.
We’ll bring you updates in the coming weeks.
