PSX Production Stopped

The phrase 'Don't worry, it's a Sony' loses its edge.

Japanese magazine Shukan Gendai claims in its latest issue that Sony has halted production of its PSX as of the start of April. The story is seemingly confirmed by the following statement from a Sony spokesman, quoted in the magazine: "Depending on demand [of the PSX], we will resume production when necessary. We are currently in the process of adjusting the inventory and assessing when to resume production."

Sony's great silver/white hope had a troubled gestation period, and its first few months at Japanese retail have been tough too. The digital media hub suffered a downgrading of its features not long before its release, including non-compatibility with CD-R and DVD+RW playback, no facility to view TIFF and GIF files, and no support for mp3 files or PlayStation Broadband, amongst others. February 2004 witnessed Sony's partial re-addressing of these omissions, but still the sceptics were not convinced.

How big the aforementioned "inventory" is hasn't been revealed to us, but we'll bet our bottom Yen that there's a hefty amount of units to shift before production of the PSX resumes.

The reason there is so little demand for it is perhaps the fact that so many people have got one already and have no need to buy another. The Phrase mentioned it the title is a completely stupid statement. Sony are a much better business than most out there and allways keep a good image. I see no problem with a periodic adjustment.

- Over 50 million people have PS2s, and the console is still in heavy production.

"The Phrase mentioned it the title is a completely stupid statement."
- I don't know what this means.

- SONY Betamax, SONY MD, SONY VAIO: all failures! Technology is based on trial and error. Sometimes companies succeed, other times they do not. Think before you speak.

Oi youth! Did you not watch TV in the 1980's? Did you never thrill to the authoratative tones of Sir John of Cleese on the Sony advert? For stupid statements, try Nokia.

Beta max is still in use in TV studios, MD is still uded a lot for home recording and VAIO laptops and palmtops are still on sale. Where are the failures in there?

Good advice, take it.

Define Failure! Betamax was a superior recording format, and exists as BetaCam even today. MD wasn't a failure in Japan.

Vaio, a failure? Please explain!

But PSX is a failure. It fails me because I can't buy one today, and if I could, all it would do is what my TiVo and my PS2 can do.

I want a single box that can play movies and audio files and display pictures over wireless network. That can record TV live TV, witha program guide, and the ability to change channels on my cable box, and that lets me play PS2 games, and record DVDs. THAT I would buy.

PS2 promised that most of that, but didn't deliver... and isn't even available outside of Japan!
