US website The Tech Report has published more emerging details on Nintendo's upcoming DS gadget, and it seems that 'gadget' is about the right way to describe it at the moment.
In an analyst report issued in the USA yesterday, and published by CNN Money, PJ McNealy of American Technology Research revealed that Nintendo's next portable will offer multimedia functionality, instant messaging, wireless multiplayer gaming, and will come with a stylus. Sounds to us like a cross between a Game Boy, a PDA and a record player. But seriously, these new details - if absolutely true - are taking the DS out of the sphere of pure gaming and towards similar territory currently occupied by the Nokia N-Gage. Nintendo has maintained its usual 'keep schtum' stance, acknowledging only the barest of facts: that the DS has two screens and two processors.
McNealy notes, "The form factor will feature two three-inch screens that fold together, similar to that of the Game Boy Advance. There will be two flipper controls, two directional pads, and an 'a' and 'b' button. The stylus will be used for gaming, Instant Messaging, and other multimedia functionalities."
Sony is reported to have dropped wireless functionality from its PSP development schedule, but may well consider a reappraisal following the news of Nintendo's plans for the DS.
