A world of confusion has engulfed the Nintendo community over the last few days, with the word 'Nitro' on everyone's lips. And why would everyone be uttering an amusingly macho 1980's-type word?
It’s because according to some, the Nintendo Nitro will be the finalised name for the Nintendo DS!
Indeed, developers in the west are currently receiving preliminary information relating to the DS in which - and throughout all literature - the device is referred to as the Nintendo Nitro.
This situation was reflected at Nintendo’s developer site until this morning, when the name was switched back to Nintendo DS. Crafty old Nintendo, eh?
At this point, it is not known whether Nitro is the internal name for the machine, as Dolphin was to the GameCube and Ultra 64 was to the Nintendo 64. Surely we all prefer the Nintendo DS moniker, no?
You may be aware of some ridiculous and poorly-researched stories on various sites, reporting that the whole Nitro debacle stemmed from the weblog of Martijn van der Meulen, online product manager for EA's Netherlands division. This is not the case. The term Nitro is used heavily in Nintendo's literature to developers and was the name it carried on the developer site until this morning.
We’ll keep you updated.
