It would appear that Sony Computer Entertainment’s massively anticipated Gran Turismo 4 will not see its revised launch date of spring 2004.
Originally slated for Christmas 2003, the Polyphony masterwork slipped to early 2004, then to Spring of this year. Sony Computer Entertainment America has now confirmed to retailers in the US that the game will not meet this timeframe and will instead hit in autumn, a massive blow to the credibility of Polyphony Digital and the PlayStation 2’s online offering.
Essentially, Microsoft has provided its Live subscribers with an online racer with some success. Though lacking the depth, craft and subtlety of Polyphony's previous offerings, the fact is that Project Gotham Racing 2 is out there and is being played.
Although not confirmed by SCE, it is likely that online integration issues are to blame for this latest slip. It has been well publicised that Polyphony has struggled with this element of the game for months, with seemingly little success. However, far from being a basic failing on the part of the development studio, this new slip will more than likely reflect the groundbreaking level of detail and realism we expect from the title. Studio head Kazunori has stated time and time again that every element of Gran Turismo 4 must be perfect – nothing less.
And as we all know, perfection takes time. So we will wait. And we will again have to look at the game on show at E3, rather than take it down from our own shelves and play all night. Still, the best things come to those who wait and all that...
Expect everything GT4, right here, as it breaks.
