Capcom Makes Another GameCube Switch – Killer 7 for PlayStation 2

Exclusive game makes platform jump before original even releases.

Capcom Japan has revealed that a PlayStation 2 version of Killer 7 is in production, stunning the Nintendo community in what is the latest in a poorly- concealed program of incrementally inching away from the GameCube.

Many mocked the rife speculation that Nintendo and Capcom were becoming cosy towards the end of 2002, though highly positioned industry insiders have time and again assured us that for a time, the two Japanese giants were poised to announce some sort of agreement that would have had a serious impact on the games industry.

As you may recall, information and gossip leaked from Capcom Japan back in November and December 2002, with talks of a serious assimilation of Capcom by Nintendo failing towards the end of December. It was at this point that we saw Nintendo and Capcom executives get cosy at a Tokyo press conference, culminating in the announcement of five exclusive GameCube titles: PN 03, Killer 7, Dead Phoenix, Resident Evil 4 and Viewtiful Joe. Of these, PN 03 and Viewtiful Joe have been released as promised, but Dead Phoenix has already been canned.

Perhaps this shouldn’t come as such a shock. Regular readers will remember that back in January 2003, we revealed that a mass back-out from the agreement was in progress at Capcom.

We’ll bring you updates on the PlayStation 2 version of Killer 7 in the coming months.

In related news, more disappointment for GameCube owners emerged this morning, with the news that Resident Evil 4 will not be released in Europe until January of 2005.
