PS2 Wish List 2004: Killzone

Almost another year away but looking to be worth the wait.

Okay, so it’s pencilled in for NEXT Christmas but, regardless, as far as hot property for 2004 is concerned, one can’t fail to mention Killzone. Already heralded as the next Halo in terms of FPS brilliance on your console, this scrumptious looking squad-based shooter from ex-Lost Toys developer Guerrilla Games has so far been kept under a hefty amount of NDA’s, but details are starting to emerge, screenshots are doing the rounds, and the gaming community is starting to get more than just a little excited.

The game is set during a future interplanetary conflict between the Earth-loyal ISA squad and a rogue splinter group known as the Helghast. Players take the role of one of a quartet of ISA soldiers operating behind enemy lines who, after escaping a deadly Helghast attack, must struggle for survival amidst the surrounding chaos.

The reason Killzone is causing such a stir is the fact that it looks absolutely smashing – almost as good as the visual promises made in Sony’s pre-launch PS2 propaganda. All the latest fashionable graphical terminology can be found within the game, such as diffuse lighting, depth of field blur, bump-mapping, and everything throughout attains a level of smoothness and solidity that is unmatched on the PS2 to date. Oh, and apparently the game uses NURBS technology - mathematical models for rendering 3D curves and surfaces that have long been heralded as the next step in video game graphics technology.

Visual prowess aside, we are promised a deep and involving FPS of epic proportions, complete with what’s rumoured to be a truly impressive roster of online and multiplayer features. One to look forward to, by all accounts.
