A game that missed its pre-Christmas release in favour of a less rushed Easter 2004 launch, Valve’s Half-Life 2 is undoubtedly the biggest PC venture of 2004.
Delays are common in video games, though it comes as more of a blow for A-list games. However, the additional development time is likely to pay off for Half-Life 2 as Valve gets to grips with sophisticated computer AI routines and a highly advanced game engine.
The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its population dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the unutterable wrongs he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people - people he cares about - are counting on him.
Much is expected of the Half-Life sequel, but we suspect Valve is set to deliver everything it promised. It’s a long wait for avid Half-Life fans, but in the meantime, take a look at these extraordinary screens.
