March 2004 for Crystal Chronicles

Delayed GameCube offering of FF beckons.

The absence of Final Fantasy on Nintendo consoles is a void that has been felt deeply among Nintendo loyalists until recently. But now that Square Enix (formerly Squaresoft) and Nintendo have made their peace, it comes as no surprise that the first GameCube Final Fantasy game, set for 2004, is one of the most anticipated among avid RPG fans.

Following a series of delays, Crystal Chronicles in now pencilled in for an early February release next year in the States, with a PAL confirmed for March 11, 2004.

Crystal Chronicles is something of a departure from Square Enix’s standard FF releases. It discards traditional play mechanics in favour of an approach designed to have greater appeal to the GameCube demographic. The game’s style is distinctly Japanese - almost medieval - but it’s a relatively fresh approach that will be applauded in the long run.

The game promises a brand new storyline and a typically massive adventure, but most importantly it will be the first game in the series to offer four-player role-playing action. We’re not sure as to how the game will work as a whole, but we remain confident that it will be massively successful when it’s finally released next year.

And if you’re a UK gamer, and you can’t wait until March, get yourselves a copy of the US version and Freeloader in February.
