Panasonic Q rattles the can

GameCube DVD: The dream is over
Nintendo of Japan, in conjunction with Panasonic, has announced that the GameCube DVD hybrid, Q, has been canned, with no more units being manufactured as of the end of this week.

Panasonic stated that the machine is simply not selling well enough, with consumer apathy from launch compounded by Nintendo's recent price hack seeing GameCube sales soar.

Indeed, the Q in Japan retails for a shade over £180, compared to the GameCube, a snip at £78. Combine this with impossibly cheap DVD player and recorder prices across the Far East, and the Q never really stood a chance.

This also hammers the final nail of doom into the coffin of hope that had surrounded the Q outside of Japan, with many US and European gamers hopeful - until today - that the delicious-looking system would see a western roll-out.

Still, the PSX will launch in summer over here. So if you really want a futuristic looking console-cum-DVD type thingy and you have deep pockets, get involved.
