Playstation 3 for E3 - Cell Processor Ready by March 2004
According to reports trickling out of Japan this morning, the PlayStation 3 is somewhat closer than was predicted, with the CELL processor apparently about to emerge from Toshiba's research and development plant in Yokohama.

In a joint statement issued by Sony and Toshiba, the firms asserted that work on the 65nm chip production technology, which is considerably more advanced than anything available for commercial use today, is proceeding to plan.

Indeed, the first operable units, manufactured to the final spec of the PlayStation 3's CELL, will, according to SCE, be available by March of next year at the very latest.

This news is in keeping with the plan announced by Sony Computer Entertainment front man Ken Kutaragi earlier this year, when he stated that real-time demos of PlayStation 3 game software would be available by mid 2004.

It is widely expected that a serious PlayStation 3 announcement is scheduled for next year's E3 conference, due to take place in May in Los Angeles. Prospective release plans and software, as well as a more specific technical breakdown, are all expected, with Sony raising the stakes in the battle for the next generation of home gaming machines.
