Konami Kyoto’s seminal soccer offering Pro Evolution Soccer, has snagged the top-spot in the UK All Formats charts, launching safely ahead of EA’s license-a-thon FIFA 2004.
This now surely cements the series’ position as one of Konami’s globally recognised mega-selling key franchises, joining such monsters as Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid.
And it must be said that Pro Evo is a true triumph of gameplay over adversity. The game is famously hard, it’s difficult to score a goal, and on paper would seem the least attractive of games. And yet it’s just this sentiment that has captured the hearts, minds and wallets of PlayStation 2 owners.
The frustration that can creep in when playing goaless games is more than matched by the elation of scoring. You feel you’ve worked for it.
And in these cynical times of easy-access, dumbed-down gaming, the fact that gamers are still willing to work for their rewards is testament to the fact that the marketeers and publisher A&R's that blight the industry have yet to unravel and ruin true videogaming in its purest form.
