Yay! It’s Donkey Konga, the super-camp, slap-happy drumming and rhythm game, co-developed by Nintendo and Namco. And thrilling news today sees our man on the ground in Japan have a bash with the game that is as hot as the sun.
For a start, the game has four inputs, left skin slap, right skin slap, double skin slap and a previously unannounced clap function that is picked up by a microphone within the peripheral.
The mechanic underlining the whole play experience sees all mini-games follow this basic premise: a red circle on-screen, you hit the left drum; yellow, you hit the right drum; pink circle - hit both. A lightning bolt-type thingy triggers clapping, and then you’re off.
The music content has been beefed up somewhat from the original J-Pop-driven offering as unveiled several weeks ago. Nintendo has thrown a load of uptempo remixes of some of its most popular game themes, including the Mario Bros theme (naturally), the original Donkey Kong BGM, Donkey Kong Country, various Kirby games and even Legend of Zelda gets a mention.
The finalised controller itself is a joy to behold, it must be said. It’s two barrels from Donkey Kong Country joined together, and is DK and Nintendo-branded, a true adornment to any self-respecting Nintendo fan’s gaming boudoir.
The games, most of which are locked, form two distinct sets. You have basic rhythm and timing games, as with any music game, and other action games, in which you can move left with the left drum, right with the right drum, and have two different actions, one with clap and one with double drum strike.
We are hoping to get further, more detailed access to Donkey Konga in the coming weeks, so we’ll bring you more detailed game impressions then. Oh, and the word from Nintendo is that more content will be added to Donkey Konga by way of budget-priced add-on discs…
