Nintendo at full-power as GameCube hammers PS2, Xbox

What a difference a price makes...

Nintendo of America is revelling in the fact that the GameCube, the long-time whipping boy of the American games hardware market has started outselling both Xbox and PlayStation 2.

According to independent statistics, the week ending October 4, 2003 sees the GameCube out-perform PlayStation 2 by 20% and Xbox by a staggering 145% - not bad going for a console written off as doomed by doubters.

Of course, this is a direct result of the price of the GameCube system dropping to a mere $99, but an installed userbase spike is always welcomed. It’s also worth pointing out that, according to the firm’s Kyoto office, the $99 pricepoint still sees the machine break even on cost of manufacture.

It will be interesting to see if the recently-announced European price slash has a similar effect...
