Earlier than expected, Sony’s Electronics division has unveiled the PlayStation 2 hybrid - the PSX - a device that combines DVD recording and playback, a CD player, hard disc functionality and PlayStation gaming in a single unit.

Two versions will go on sale; a base model equipped with a 160GB hard disc, and a deluxe version coming with a massive 250GB disc storage device.

It was also revealed that a satellite TV decoder will be built into the PSX, something which was previously unannounced.

The prices, for the Japanese market, will be 79,800 yen and 99,800 yen respectively, equating to £430 and £538, considerably cheaper than the circa £1,000 price point as widely predicted two months ago when the machine was announced.

However, it is likely that prices outside of Japan, and in Europe in particular, will be around 30% higher than those enjoyed in Sony’s domestic market.

The PSX will go on sale before the end of this year in Japan, where Sony has struggled to maintain the stranglehold it once enjoyed on the consumer electronics market, with a Western retail roll-out not expected until mid-2004 at the earliest.

We’ll bring you updates on all PSX activity, box fresh from Japan, as they break.
