Sony Computer Entertainment has announced a price hack of £30 for the PlayStation 2 in the UK, with the machine now retailing at a recommended price of £139.
Also announced was the limited edition Platinum version, which will cost a premium £149.
In the absence of any true killer app this Christmas, Sony no doubt has its eye on furthering its market-leading installed base, backed by what has to be described as the best library of mainstream software ever seen on a games console.
It is widely expected that Microsoft will follow with a similar move in the coming weeks, with some predicting a £99 price-point for the Xbox.
