US to get PS2 Final Fantasy XI in March 2004

Europe waits, then waits some more.

US gamers will have to wait just six more months to play the first online Final Fantasy on their PS2 consoles, Sony announced today.

In a completely new approach for the company, it has also emerged that Final Fantasy XI will come pre-installed on a 40 GB hard drive for $99 (around £62) - a reasonable asking price, we reckon.

Final Fantasy purists will be able to join the Japanese community for just $12.99 per month next March, but will have to pay extra fees for additional characters.

Unsurprisingly, there was no mention of a European release, but given this latest information, UK gamers will consider themselves lucky should the game arrive before Christmas 2004. Alternatively, those who simply can’t wait can import the US PC version from the end of October.

We’ll keep you posted.
