PSP development kits to ship next week

Hands-on with fully spec'ed machine due.

We can reveal today that within the next 14 days, PSP development kits are due to hit studios across the world, with the first phase of programming seemingly concreting SCE’s release plans.

“Yup, we get ours perhaps as early as this week,” a UK development source told us. “It’s been a bit of a free-for-all of late. Everyone’s scrambling to make sure they get a kit and the licensing and deal-making happening at [ECTS] is the most frenzied it’s been in years.”

Indeed, the amount of PSP chatter at ECTS was refreshing at a show that offered practically no official news. Some of you may have seen the piece we ran talking of what was at the time the first and only PSP game signed and leaked. Unfortunately, we had to take that story down, as the studio behind the title hadn’t actually finalised the deal for the movie tie-in. However, when quizzed on the possibility of two specific titles, namely This Is Football and Gran Turismo 3 or 4, a SCE source did say, “We are making it as close to a PlayStation 2 under the bonnet as possible. You do the math.”

In other news, we have booked a session with one of the new kits when it arrives at a European studio in the next week or so. Hopefully we’ll be able to bring you information on precise specifications and what, if any technical demos are included. Unless we’re bumped off by SCEE in the meantime.

Stay tuned for more on this soon.
