Initial Doom 3 multiplayer impressions

It’s small, but it works

Doom 3 has been shown in playable form for the first time, as expected, at QuakeCon - id Software’s own LAN tournament and future products expo.

At this point in time, only deathmatch is playable and only one level at that, designed by Splash Damage, the team behind Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Frustratingly, only four players can play at this point. This is likely to be increased, though id would not confirm this one way or the other.

The level on display was entirely unique, not a single-player map, though it seemed to be set in the lab area shown in the first demo build, tragically leaked by a third-party earlier this year.

The environment is riddled with danger. As pioneered in Quake 3 Arena, it’s not just your opponents that can kill you. Pressure chambers, electrical charges and huge machinery must be avoided at all times.

The basic set of weapons were on show: Pistol, a Shotgun, a Machine gun, a Plasma gun, and a Rocket Launcher, all augmented by a 30X damage power-up - the only power-up included in this build.

It’s worth pointing out that this latest build is running much faster than the last one shown. It is running at a higher resolution, rumoured by some to be 50% higher no less.

Unfortunately, Quake 4, id’s true multiplayer offering, was not shown at the event.

More on everything Quake, Doom and id, as it breaks.
