It’s time to pass the buck as Lara gets milked

Amazing Tomb Raider game slammed by film studio exec!

Yesterday we brought you news that the latest Tomb Raider movie had bombed at the US box office during launch, and idled some speculation as to why this might be.

Well, it seems that the studio behind Cradle of Life, Paramount Pictures, has managed to pin it down. Read this extract taken from a Reuters interview with Paramount distribution president Wayne Lewellen:

“The only thing we can attribute that to is that the gamers were not happy with the latest version of the Tomb Raider video game, which is our core audience.”

So there we have it. A game that entered the charts at number one caused a movie franchise to float belly up in the Hollywood pond. Is this the very lowest form of buck-passing we’ve yet seen in a “game/other” collaboration? Perhaps it is.

More interesting is how this might affect other game-based movies that are currently in planning or production stages. Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead and more Resident Evil movies are all on the go, to name but a few.

Is the romance over? We’ll have to wait and see.
