Sex-appeal videogame cross-over flounders

Latest Lara movie panned stateside
The latest Tomb Raider movie, Lara Croft Tomb Raider II: Cradle of Life, has seen a poor opening in the US box office ratings, entering the charts at number four.

Sitting behind Bad Boys II, Pirates of the Caribbean and Spy Kids 3D (which embarrassingly stole the top spot), Tomb Raider II took just £13.8 million - less than half the amount scooped by the first movie when it launched in 2001.

Exactly what this means for Lara's future outside of videogaming is yet to be seen. Many will blame the cash-rich, but inspiration-devoid black-hole that engulfs any property that is as successful as Tomb Raider.

It seems that when something grows into a mass-market phenomenon in this way, decision makers are so far detached from the original core (no pun intended) consumer they only have clichéd concepts and marketing-spew to work with, neither of which have any appeal to the legions of loyal, die-hard TR fans.
