UK Charts: EyeToy dethrones Lara!

Window cleaning overthrows tomb raiding…

The all-formats chart from UK retail has thrown up a surprise this week, with SCEE’s EyeToy motion-sensing gadget game usurping the Eidos power-franchise that is Tomb Raider.

Indeed, Angel of Darkness has slipped into second place, followed by Enter the Matrix, Formula One 2003 and SOCOM: US Navy SEALs.

Both EyeToy and Tomb Raider launched together three weeks ago and, backed by a fierce marketing campaign, Eidos won out. Though it’s fair to say that the press had somewhat restricted access to the game pre-launch, meaning that the reviews, most of which savaged Tomb Raider, did not hit newsstands until after the game had been released.

There has also been a mini-wave of cult-kitsch euphoria passing through the country since EyeToy became a reality. It is the first game since Vice City to be discussed at length by groups of young adults in public houses up and down the land, with this key demographic seemingly unable to resist the Sony Trojan webcam-videogame hybrid.
