Defining the balance between toy car and wonky-looking robot

It has to be Transformers, this time for PlayStation 2.

Well it’s true isn’t it? Transformers always looked fine in their car/ship/plane/dinosaur guises, but as robots, they tended to look a bit, well, kind of knobbly and a bit rubbish.

No matter. Everyone loved them and bought them in their millions, so much so that a fresh outing, Transformers Armada, has been igniting TV sets and toyshops around the world for some time. And what does every major toy and TV franchise need? Why a video game spin-off, of course!

Well let Andrew Carter explain. He knows all about it, given he’s the vice president of product development at Atari. “We're working diligently to develop a game that expands upon the Transformers Armada brand to deliver a truly unique experience with intense gameplay, vast environments and an emphasis on combat," said Carter. “Every massive environment and character model will be delivered with an unprecedented level of visual realism by harnessing PlayStation 2 system's powerful graphics technology and techniques - resulting in incredible rendering effects and absolute immersion for players."

The game is a third-person 3D romp, set in the Armada generation of Transformers. There will hopefully be a lot of fighting involved, with destroyed Decepticons crumbling into little blocks of plastic and die-cast metal components (Not suitable for children under 3 – choking hazard).

Excellent news, indeed. Enjoy these screens for now and stay tuned for more on Transformers Armada: Prelude to Energon, an exclusive PlayStation 2 title, as it breaks.
