Nintendo: ‘Screen quality is everything’
Following on from our news last week that Nintendo is well underway with ‘speccing’ up the next Game Boy machine, hardware research engineer Tsuyoshi Kiyuna has gone on record, disclosing what the firm is looking for in its next portable.

“Screen quality is everything," he said. "I want to make a better screen to solve some of the problems we have now. The majority of complaints from Game Boy Advance SP users is about dust. We want a dust-free screen and users of our next-generation handheld game machine won't be happy unless we solve these problems.”

He went on to talk about the technical direction for such screens, and mentioned an intriguing method of display known as organic electro-luminescence. Organic electro-luminescence offers high resolution lighted screens that consume far less power than standard front/back-lit screens in use today.

Although no mention was made of what media the new Game Boy will take, or any other details for that matter, this does show Nintendo’s commitment to protecting its handheld market space across the globe.

With Sony, the world’s leading manufacturer of home electronics, poised to launch its own machine - the PSP - next year, it’s commonly thought that Nintendo will aim for a Q4 2004 release for its machine too.

We’ll bring you everything on PSP and GBA 2 as it breaks.
