At close of play yesterday in the US, Activision, one of the world’s biggest developer/publishers, announced that it had filed a lawsuit against Star Trek TV and film intellectual property holder Viacom.
The suit filed, as ever at the Supreme Court in Los Angeles, claims that Viacom has not done enough to promote the Star Trek brand moving forward, not released enough movies and failed to bring to market any new TV shows and/or films.
In a frankly worded filing at court, Activision said, “A continuing pipeline of movie and television production and related marketing, is absolutely crucial to the success of video games based on a property such as Star Trek. However, through its actions and inactions, Viacom has let the once proud Star Trek franchise stagnate and decay.”
Viacom came out fighting, insisting that Activision is attempting to use the court as a precursor to a perceived arbitration dispute. “Activision's allegations are without merit. Indeed, Activision appears to be trying to use the courts in an effort to re-negotiate a deal it made in 1998 to secure the rights to the valued Star Trek franchise for interactive games."
We’ll let you know the outcome.
