Enter the Matrix ships 2.5M – still 1.5 short
Atari has today announced that it has shipped just over 2.5 million units of Enter the Matrix worldwide, without question the biggest project ever handled by the French outfit, formerly Infogrames.

In a tellingly cautious comment to press, CEO Bruno Bonnell said, "In view of the performance to date, Enter the Matrix is on the right track. It is very satisfactory to see a title become a true success from its launch, but it's even more exciting to see that world demand for Enter the Matrix remained steady."

However, this figure falls somewhat short of the 4 million units most industry watchers believe the firm needs to shift before it even breaks even on the project, which runs at to-market costs of a staggering $100 million.

This is compounded by the relatively sluggish sales for PC, the platform that offers Atari the biggest return per-unit. Indeed, the PC version of the game now resides at number seven in its respective chart, despite holding at number two on GameCube and number one for both PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

We’ll keep you updated on the do-or-die Atari game, as anything new arises.
