In this week’s Famitsu, the world’s most respected gaming journal, there is a question and answer session aimed at bottoming out the juicier gossip to be heard from the games industry.
One of the questions talks of a remake of Nintendo’s inaugral console the Famicom, better known in the west as the NES.
Speaking to Nintendo, Famitsu asked, “Is it true Nintendo will be releasing a 20th-anniversary Famicom?” To which the answer came, “We have received a large response from the media and users as the anniversary approaches, so we’d like to do something to celebrate the 20th anniversary.”
As to whether any hardware will be seen remains to be seen, though a sizable NES/Famicom software compilation for GameCube and Game Boy Advance is a distinct possibility. In the same section, Nintendo Japan is asked about a global roll-out of the NES eReader cards, to which the reply was, “There are no plans to sell Famicom games for eReader at this time. Our software is a valuable resource, and we would like to use this resource in some way in the future,” seemingly confirming a software bonanza.
It’s all good, and we’ll bring you updates as they break.
