At a press conference held this morning in Tokyo, Nintendo underlined its expectations for GameCube sales in the current financial year.
Specifically, Nintendo estimates that it will shift over six million consoles, following sales of 5.7 million last year, a figure widely seen as modest given the price point and scheduled software line up the machine is enjoying.
However, some analysts point to recent slow sales of the GameCube as a worrying factor for Nintendo’s home console push. The UK market in particular saw a surprise drop in sales following the release of the acclaimed Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for the system.
On a brighter note, Nintendo upped its projected Game Boy Advance sales to 20 million for the year, some 25% up on last year’s sell-through figure of 15.65 million.
However, what one must remember through all this, is that Nintendo is the only company seeing a profit from hardware sales and makes money hand over fist with both Game Boy Advance and GameCube. So really, what does it matter? Nintendo is here to stay.
