According to reports from Japan this morning, Nintendo is beavering away on a new chip for Game Boy Advance that will see the revival of the famed Super FX chip as debuted in StarFox for the SNES all those years ago.
Depending on which report you read, Nintendo’s research and development unit is either working on the chip, to be incorporated into a future hardware model, or to be made available within the game cartridge, a la Star Fox.
The reason being offered is that Nintendo wished to up the 3D output of the GBA in order to stave off competition from Nokia, Sony Ericsson and the mystical PSP from Sony.
However, it’s worth bearing in mind that Nintendo, right from the off, has insisted that the Game Boy Advance is a 2D and 2D only machine. Only third-party developers have pushed the dimensional possibilities of the console, with Pocketeers (formerly AGB Games) at the forefront of innovation.
There’s no smoke without someone soldering a PCB, or so they say. Expect updates on this story soon.
