Upon releasing its year-end financials, Nintendo has admitted that sales of the GameCube have not been up to the expected standard, with profits dipping a massive 38% on last year. The main reason given for this was the relatively slow sales of GameCube hardware and software, which again failed to make even Nintendo’s own revised predictions.
Nintendo stated that it managed to shift around 5.6 million ‘Cubes, significantly less than the projected 10 million. “GameCube sales were bad worldwide,'' Chief Financial Officer Yoshihiro Mori said, contradicting the firm’s usual ‘all is well, honest’ approach.
However, the ever-faithful Game Boy continued to power Nintendo throughout last year, with GBA sales exceeding the firms estimates by some 700,000 units, shifting 15 million around the world. GBA software, a big earner for Nintendo, sold 18 million units, an impressive 16% higher than expected.
