Pain-tolerance increases with gaming.

A report by Brian Raudenbush, professor of psychology at Wheeling Jesuit University in the USA, has uncovered some interesting findings, which point towards videogames making players better able to cope with pain.

The test involved players dipping a hand in ice-cold water with no distraction, then doing the same during a session of House of the Dead 3. According to the report, people involved in playing videogames can endure up to twice the normal level of pain.

“It was only the active video game that would produce the effect," Raudenbush said. "We're thinking doctors who deal with children might find it useful to outfit their office with a video game machine."

Speculation that these results were generated due to the fact that gamers, constantly harangued by parents, girlfriends and the like, had built up a tolerance to pain this way remains unconfirmed.
