Final Fantasy series hits slowdown as series development backlog shows strain

During a recent interview, Final Fantasy producer Yoshinori Kitase said that there are no plans afoot with SquareSoft for sequels to either Final Fantasy X-2 or Final Fantasy XII.

“There is no pressure within Square to develop a new sequel in the Final Fantasy series at the moment”, he said. This followed Kitase-san specifically saying that no work had started on any project called Final Fantasy XIII.

This news has led to speculation that Square’s announced game portfolio has become something of an unruly beast, with no sign yet of Final Fantasy XII or FF Crystal Chronicles. As you may be aware, Crystal Chronicles has fallen off the European release schedule for GameCube.
