GameCube shakes off Dreamcast syndrome

Lengthy discussions with Electronic Arts deliver.

To the joy and amazement of Nintendo fans the world over, Electronic Arts, the world’s biggest third-party publisher by some seven times, has announced a significant deal that will see 20 - that’s right - 20 games released for the GameCube.

As you will be aware, Electronic Arts was backing out of GameCube support at a rate of knots, with the games giant claiming that Nintendo margins, combined with slower than expected hardware sales, were making the platform unsupportable.

Electronic Arts, renowned for throwing its weight about, both at retail and with platform owners, seems to have been able to broker a deal with Nintendo that sees future GameCube support make business sense. Let’s hope Nintendo can see the light across the board, enabling all publishers to confidently release titles for the machine.

What’s more, EA announced that it will deliver a dedicated GBA link system with its world-leading EA Sports brand.

EA Senior President and General Manager for Europe, Gerhard Florin, said: "This agreement means that three of the world's most popular sports games - FIFA, Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf, and Madden NFL football - are going to include a new way to play, and new way to compete on Nintendo systems."

We are glad that Nintendo has seen sense and made a business proposition that is considered tenable by a company as important as EA. Hopefully, this deal, whatever it may be, will be opened up to the rest of the publishing world.
