Sato rejects latest Microsoft/EA speculation

‘It’s all lies!’

Sega president Hideki Sato has blasted reports, originating from the reliable and well-respected Wall Street Journal, that both Electronic Arts and Microsoft are poised to make some kind of bid for the firm, following a weekend of frenzied speculation.

Sato, a rare public speaker, addressed the press in Tokyo to say, “It is not true at all that Electronic Arts of the United States has sounded us out on a capital tie-up. There is also no truth in the Microsoft capital tie-up talk. We will give the top priority to the earlier announced (sic) integration of operations with Sammy and work towards it.”

So there you almost have it.

Calls to Sega Europe this morning resulted in an eagerness to give a “no comment” response before any particular question was posed, indicating that there is, perhaps, something on the boil.

There is not often smoke, particularly of this thickness, without at least a smouldering fire of truth. We’ll keep sniffing, and bring you the results.
