We were lucky enough to spend some time with Ryoichi Shiratsuchi, the gregarious director of Sega’s network division and CEO of Sega.com yesterday, and we had an interesting chat about the future of the well-funded, but strangely quiet Sega M division.
Talking for the first time about the way Sega Mobile is integrating itself with the rest of Sega, Shiratsuchi-san told us some impressive facts concerning several key Sega franchises.
“Oh yes, Sega Mobile will be working with Suzuki-san for Virtua Fighter in the near future,” he chuckled. “Have you seen the cards that come with Virtua Fighter in Japan for arcade? They give players items, bonuses and so on, as well as store and save data, like wins and losses. This will eventually be translated to mobile device, with the same data being used, but stored and operated from phones and such like.”
This was excellent news and Shiratsuchi-san was obviously excited. “We hope to be able to show players strengths and weaknesses within the data, and we hope that some sort of game that will enhance skills in some way will be included. We also expect that Sega Mobile will become a very important link between all aspects of Sega’s business, from online, to home console and arcade games. It is very exciting.”
We like the sound of this, and just hope that affordable technology catches up with Sega’s vision of the future.
