According to gossip coming out of Japan over the weekend, Shenmue III, the top secret follow up to Yu Suzuki’s seminal super-RPG, will be a CG movie, not a game.
This follows the cinematic release of Shenmue: The Movie, which consisted of all the cut-scenes and some in game footage from the original Dreamcast release.
Much of the talk reflects the massive expense Sega has to shoulder to produce any new Shenmue game. Although the engine is largely in place, to make the game progressively free-roaming would require a huge amount of work, whereas a movie, on rails, would not.
The rumours are lent weight by the fact that AM2 boss Yu Suzuki, in his new year newsletter, mentioned that Shenmue III would contain certain surprising and important elements.
