As we all know, the father of all first-person shooters makes a return next year. Anyone who has seen the screenshots from E3 will understand why the stunning quality of the visuals is the subject on everyone's lips. But remember the early Getaway pics? "These are not photos, they are in-game footage" they said. Of course they were! Well anyone fearing that the Doom III shots are just tarted-up renders need fret no more. Thanks to a certain piece of leaked alpha code, we can assure you that those shots are genuine and that the game really does look as sexy as you'd imagine. In fact, everything about the game is coming along a treat.
In keeping with the game's promise to terrify players, at the heart of it all is a fantastic lighting engine that keeps everything sparsely lit, atmospheric and scary. Every light source in the game is completely dynamic and behaves in a realistic manner, casting shadows off every object and generally making for a truly authentic environment.
What makes the game most impressive though is the texturing on the models. Bump-mapped and highly detailed, the textures throughout are simply stunning, going so far as to render pores on a character's face and even individual hairs on his head. You can almost feel the monsters as they charge towards you.
Most remarkable is that, at present, the code runs acceptably on an average machine with a GeForce 4 MX and still manages to look fantastic. Carmack et al have certainly got a treat in store for us next year.
We'll keep you posted on all things Doom in the coming months.
