After years of Microsoft battling claims that its Xbox is secretly an online shopping and video-on-demand hub, Sony has today unveiled its own plans to deliver such content.
In a deal brokered with Advent Networks and BroadQ, PlayStation 2 units in the US will soon be able to receive video content streamed by Advent that will be decoded using BroadQ DIVX software.
In a statement, Advent chief Geoff Tudor simply said, “Consumers are buying PS2’s twice as fast as cable operators are deploying digital set-tops. It makes perfect sense to offer this service to this customer base at this time.”
As the system is broadband reliant, a European roll-out, at least in the short to medium term, looks unlikely.
It will be hugely interesting to see how Microsoft, or even Nintendo, respond to this move. As ever, we’ll keep you posted.
