Pokemon proves a retail monster again

Colossal GBA spike triggered in Japan.

Nintendo of Japan has stated that its latest Pokemon duo, Ruby and Sapphire, has triggered some of the fiercest sales of the Game Boy Advance hardware seen since launch.

According to the latest sales tracking figures from the country, last week saw sales of around 160,000, almost triple the weekly average. Furthermore, the GameCube also benefited from Pokemon’s re-emergence, selling almost as many units as the PlayStation 2. Mario Party 4 also entered the charts at number one.

Initial week sales figures for Ruby and Sapphire were also released. Although unofficially, over two million units were shipped, the party line is sales of 700,984 and 673,037 respectively.

Annoyingly, Nintendo of Europe is still to give us a date for a European release of Ruby and Sapphire, but we can console ourselves in the knowledge that Japanese gamers are enjoying them very much. As soon as we hear anything, you'll be the first to know.
