At a press conference over the weekend in Japan, SquareSoft put to rest some issues that were nagging at the hearts of its somewhat obsessive fanbase.
Initially, it outlined what will be included in the enigmatic Final Fantasy XI expansion pack, known as Final Fantasy XI: Ziraat no Gen'ei, which translates as ‘Vision of Ziraat’. According to company sources, a new character class known as Summoner will be included, as well as whole bunch of new character mods and several new landscapes, including a volcanic island.
The firm also stated that continuous registered user figures for its PlayOnline gaming service that hosts FF XI are strong, with 180,000 players RPG’ing it on a regular basis.
As far as the sequel to Final Fantasy X is concerned, FF X 2 will feature Rikku and Yuna in a completely new adventure, with a graphical overhaul from legendary Square artist Tetsu Tsukamoto. Interestingly, the narrative-based aspect of the original has been removed in favour of a whole bunch of mini-adventures, accessible through the air via the trusty airship.
Furthermore, Square revealed that its finances, crippled by misguided over-investment into Square Pictures, have recovered somewhat since ditching its movie venture. Sales profits were strong on the back of Final Fantasy X selling well across America and Europe, with Kingdom Hearts also doing good business. Square mentioned that the Disney-themed Kingdom Hearts sold almost 600,000 copies in its first three days on sale in the US.
