Nintendo to fight its corner

New versions of both the GameCube and the Game Boy Advance revealed!

There has been a veritable frenzy of gossip in the games industry in the past few months that puts Nintendo in the same boat as Sega, poised to develop and publish games for PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2.

Picking up on this, Nintendo’s Peter MacDougall sought to stamp out the fire during his speech at the GKM Conference and amazingly, spoke of new versions of both the Game Boy Advance and the GameCube!

“Nintendo is in the software business - to stay,” rallied MacDougall. “Nintendo is in the handheld business - to stay. And Nintendo is most certainly in the home console business - to stay. Work is well underway on the successor technology to both Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube.”

We already knew that a new GBA is about to make its debut, however, it was widely thought that the GameCube would be the last home console offering from Nintendo.

This incredible news means a second round of the three-way console war is now slated for sometime around 2005. Sony has stated time and time again that it intends to release the enigmatic PlayStation 3 in this year. Microsoft then went on record to say that it will release Xbox Version 2 before the new SCE machine hits. Nintendo has never been drawn into the debate.

In fact, a new version of the GameCube has not even entered the wider consciousness of the global gaming community. Until now.

Remember Dolphin? Remember the Ultra 64? Remember the months, no, years of waiting for new Nintendo hardware. This is all due to recommence with a vengeance - truly brilliant news.

We are going to bet on an announcement at E3 next year. Nintendo could certainly use a show-stopper and what better way to grab the world’s attention could there be than to announce that a weird-sounding new machine is in development.
